blacksburg basketball center.

PROPOSAL:
Replace an old motel and parking lot within the original 16 blocks of Blacksburg, Virginia, with a new recreation center.
SITE WORK:
Sprawling grass steps, set into the ground, will encourage an area of public gathering and relaxation
LOCAL FABRIC:
It is a public project that engages the adjacent farmer’s market through pedestrian circulation, view consideration, and architectural iconography.  The camera shop on the corner of the site is left undisturbed, on a plateau, to stimulate local business, while a modern architectural intervention gives the locals something to enjoy and take pride in.
LOW BASKETBALL COURT:
The court is weighed down by heavy concrete, low in the site. Sliding glass doors at ground level and large, operable skylights offer a flexibility of sight and natural air ventilation. A green roof provides a place for simple recreation and views of Blacksburg.
HIGH BASKETBALL COURT:
The verticality of wood describes a jewel for the street, cantilevering over and creating a dialogue with the sidewalk below (glass floor panels over main walkways). A forest of columns below can mediate travel, provide shade, and form many private seating and standing areas.
